The Dwelling Place ... A solution to the homeless problem that   actually works.

Mission Statement
The Dwelling Place is a shelter for homeless women in New York City. Here we provide for the basic needs of food, clothing and shelter as well as for the less tangible needs of love, respect, acceptance and belonging. We meet these needs in an atmosphere that witnesses to the love of God for each person and the call of Jesus to love as we have been loved. We act as a voice for those who often cannot effectively make their needs known by raising the awareness of people to the needs of the homeless. We commit ourselves to this mission, empowered by the Holy Spirit and strengthened by the sharing of the gifts and talents of all.

The Dwelling Place - A Refuge for Women

Home is ... a place where I belong. I feel safe here.
Our philosophy is simple. We treat the women who come to us as guests. Everyone must respect each other. We create an environment that bears witness to the love of God for each person and the call of Jesus to love as we have been loved. The Dwelling Place started in 1977 to respond to an ever growing need to shelter homeless women continues its mission to provide a safe place where women can come to find shelter, food, medical and psychiatric services and a haven that is safe and warm..

Home is ... where I sleep.
Fifteen beds are available for women who are using The Dwelling Place as their home until permanent housing becomes available. The staff work with the women to assist them with housing that is affordable and appropriate.

Home is ... where you eat.
The Dwelling Place offers a hot meal to women 30 and over. Women are invited to come and sit down with each other and enjoy not only the food being served but most especially the company of each other. Dinner Time often is a forum for renewing old acquaintances, catching up on the latest news and opinions and on occasion a place to be entertained, enlightened or come closer in sharing our beliefs.

Home is ... where the heart is.
Our days and weeks are comprised of fighting back tremendous obstacles. From achieving small victories and accomplishments in medical attention and treatment, to finding permanent housing solutions for our guests. Our team of five full-time workers measures our success one woman at a time. We have created a warm and nurturing environment and an effective system that gets women off the streets and into housing solutions that meet their needs. We started this endeavor in 1977. Since then we have helped feed, clothe, and shelter thousands of women. We are proud of our accomplishments and we invite you to contribute to our success.
